Located in the heart of the Eur district, a few steps away from the Nuvola conference center and the Palazzo dei Congressi, the Hilton Rome Eur La Lama is a structure with a futuristic and unprecedented design for the capital. Signed by Massimiliano Fuksas – also author of the Nuvola, the neighboring building – and for the interior design project by Lorenzo Bellini Atelier*, the hotel is 4 4-star Hilton franchise, owned and managed by Icarus, company already active in the capital’s hospitality sector with the Hilton Rome Airport and the Hilton Garden Inn Rome Airport.
Characterized by a unique design of the external structure, a narrow and silhouetted blade in the sky, the Hilton Rome Eur La Lama is spread over 16 floors, 60 meters high, 130 meters long and 16 meters wide. A monolith of transparent black glass that stands out in the sky, at full height: once you enter the entrance, you find the same empty 60 meter volume, the Hall, which gives you access to the lounge bar and all the internal spaces: 439 rooms, 2 restaurants, 2 bars, 1 firness room and 7 meeting rooms.
Designed by Studio Lorenzo Bellini Atelier, all the interiors of La Lama refer to the deco style of the 30’s and 40’s, which recalls the construction period of the EUR district. The same visual and decorative reference i also found in the lighting design, made by Telmotor, industrial player that offers highly specialized solutions for the lighting, industrial automations and energy sectors and is a supplier of integrated consultancy for the world of industry, infrastructure and tertiary sectors. The company was chosen as a consultancy and design partner for the implementation of the overall lighting of all the rooms and for the production of all the custom-made lighting fictures designed by the architect Lorenzo Bellini.
“The project immediately envisaged the contextualisation of the environments also through light with a functional but aesthetically elegant lighting system, able to envalue and enhance the stylistic choices of the entire project– explain Alessandro Vaglietti, Energy&Lighting Solutions Manager and Emiliano Villarini, Energy&Lighting Solutions Consultant of Telmotor. The lighting fixtures were designed by Atelier Lorenzo Bellini during the design phase, to adapt them homogeneously and harmoniously to all environments. Telmotor’s task was to create and supply the approximately 6000 custom items, starting from the choice of the technical partner capable of producing and delivering the material on time. After the consultancy phase, we followed the entire production process with the lighting partner Glip and privileged brands such as Flos, Erco and Elcom for the common areas and rooms and Simes for the exteriors for the supply of the other lighting fixtures, partners selected based on the different lightinh needs and peculiaritires of the environments. The lights combine with the furnishing elements, the choice of color block and the overall architecture starting from the room, where the light gives guests a sense of comfort, elegance and balance, to the hall, characterized by iron beams, glass and the imposing Pomodoro’s sculpture”.
In the rooms, you discover the minimal design of the lighting fixtures, all played in shades of black, white and gold: the decorative lamps are composed of a structure with tall attachment, a decorative element and not just a structural one. The finishes gives a comfortable light to the sides of the bed, thanks to blown glass diffuser. Each environment is then characterized by other lighting elements such as customized wall lamps, floor lamps, reading lights, which ensure lighting in the necessary points of the room, placing emphasis on the furnishings which in turn distribute the necessary diffused lighting.
Custom elements also characterize the long corridors and glass galleries, which connect and cross the entire length of the building. The asymmetric commas that illuminate the ceilings and the luminous stainless-steel floor sill along the glass galleries guarantee uniform, shadow-free lighting in the floor corridors. Also, along the corridors, inside lambris, lighting fixtures with LED modules at 45° downwards and providing indirect light have been inserted: with high technological content and easy maintenance, they allow optimal lighting values to be obtained with low energy impact.
In the enormous open, full-height volume of the entrance hall, artificial lighting becomes an integral part of the architecture: a technical solution proposed by Telmotor, which made possible to make the lighting fixtures “invisible”, integrating them into the structure at strategic points, but capable of giving the right light and visibility to the environment and to certain details, like the sculpture by Arnaldo Pomodoro, the bronze stele that extends upwards, and the large monumental mosaic, where the reception desk is located, illuminated with grazing light.
In the Lounge Bar area, the play of light plays its part, from the natural light through the large windows to the various lamps that liven up the rooms, like the particular crystalline luminous sphere with ocher and bronze shades that liven up the atmosphere, making the environment functional to the different needs of customers.
