Progetto Blow (s)kulture

Davide Vercelli, road to the creative process. The path to undertake to realize an installation that embodies not just a visual concept, but the result of study and experience acquired over the years.

He defined his work as a unique creative process, in fact, the “Thought of an installation and the way of realizing it are part of it (…) there is not a difference between the idea and the way of creating it”.

The planning requires a previous elaboration of the idea and a clear ideal to pursue. The mechanical and electronical component need an improvement, so that optimize the frequency of the oscillation and the periods. The final aim is to reach the synchronous operation of all imagined concept.

Progetto Blow (s)kulture

The Project Blow (S)kolture, exhibited in 2017 at Design Week, is a project that achieved peculiar prominence for the author. The expression of the correlation between physical phenomenon and visible or audible signs, causing an extraordinary sensory experience.

This artistic design exploited the opportunities offered by the energetic transformations. The electricity that changes thank to the movement, the movement that produces fluxes, the fluxes that destabilize an equilibrium and the disequilibrium that produces impacts and auditory energy. The magnetic charge of the works was generated thank to the specific use of waves and air masses, that moved it and the brain re-transformed in electricity, perceiving a different atmosphere. A phenomenon that could be defined as circular: people who saw the image found themselves at the starting point.

The installation was realized for Matrix4Design, web magazine dedicated to the world of design and the architecture, created with the aim of offering visitors the opportunity of living a meditative and sensorial experience during the hectic days of the Design Week.

For the event, Vercelli realized a real immersive sound experience, placing the movement of the public at the centre of the functioning mechanism. The design work, immersed in a bath of light of emotional impression, composed by 12 swinging sails, organized into two lines, animated thanks to some hidden micro-fans, moving only in observers’ presence. Thanks to the arrangement of some sensors in the room, it was possible to perceive the public’s movement signals and to regulate the air flows, resulting in the oscillation of the sails, that, at their extremity, had crystal stem glasses whose impact caused a harmonic and delicate sound sequence.

The Installation Blow (s)kolture poetically explored the ideas of randomness and automatic production of sound and movement. But, for the author, it also symbolized a survey into phenomenona of energy transformation that, through movement, evolves from electric into mechanical and in the end into auditory pressure.

The focal point of the project was the direct interaction with the audience, because, in its absence, the whole structure was static, and consequently silent: only participation and movement allowed the manifestation of the event. The sails distinguished by a slow oscillation and the resulting sound was coordinated with the movement. The elaboration of the movement and the consequentially processing of the sound was in part casual and random, but, in the other hand, it was proportional to the observers’ behavior.

The interactivity was fundamental for the designer, who involved it in the installation: without an observer the entire structure did not exist.

For visitors of Fuorisalone, the experience was unforgettable.

“I have always been attracted by the possibility of relating physical phenomena and detectable signs that are clearly perceptible with the senses,” has said at the event Davide Vercelli, designer with an engineering background. Attracted by the energy transformations, in his work, he exploits electricity that is transformed into movement, which in turns originates glows, that destabilises an equilibrium that causes impacts and auditory energy. Then it originates waves and air masses movement, which is transformed by our brain in new electricity.

The science and mechanics project becomes a transcendental and mystical idea. Recreating an installation, by exploiting technical skills in order to evoke emotions and magnetism. A new vision of contest, which makes space for the mixture of the subjects.
